When I sit for MOB sessions I have always felt that my Prof. Viji is one of the great stimulator(s) and when she introduced Mr. Shiva just less than a minute in session 9, I guess she had set very high expectations in most of our minds and it did not stop there, as Shiva started his own version of introduction like:
- Entrepreneur
- Visiting faculty
- Corporate coach
- Advocate &
- Night Clerk
Ho man! I was literally amazed at the following:
- Number of professions (s)
- Nature of each profession
- Kind of people
- Kind of experience &
- The transformation from one to other
Did it stop there? Nah! The moment he introduced me a new word to the vocabulary list, I was really stunned and I was reminded "கற்றது கைமண் அளவு, கல்லாதது உலகளவு" so what is that word? Biomimicry, I know what mimicry is but for the first time in my life I was introduced Biomimicry I felt my curiosity hormones levels are shooting up higher now.
Ho yes! The wind turbine's design is inspired by whales. Meanwhile, Shiva started to explain what Biomimicry (please click here to know more) is with few examples, the following are two I was awestruck and felt why these kinds of ideas are not hitting my mind.
- Learn team-building from beehives
- Washable wall paints ideated from lotus leaves.
He had left few questions to us like:
- Why don't you take up your carrier in creativity?
- Like CTO, CFO, CEO why don't we think on Cheif Creativity Officer?
- Why don't we have a department for Innovation?
These are really thought-provoking questions for me and I'm sure by the time I complete this course I may have answers for him.
It's high time let me move to the reflective learning part for the 9th session of MOB.
Tools for creativity
Yes, you read it correctly, like you, I felt என்னது creativity ku tools irruka! If someone is already aware of these tools then there should a lot of different things la! Later only I realized these tools will help us to be as creative as possible and these are not the tools that create something. The following are few tools that could help us in being more creative:
- Six Thinking Hats
- Lateral Thinking
- Design Thinking
- Biomimicry
- Systems Thinking
- TRIZ
Due to lack of time, Shiva had only covered Six Thinking Hats & Lateral Thinking. Let me give you a glimpse of these two tools.
Six Thinking Hats
I was certainly worried if I need to explain Six Thinking Hats then I need to spend more time in this blog for a while and my time will be get carried away! Thank god I have got the above picture. Indeed a picture speaks a ton of words!!!!!! These tools would definitely help us to structure our thought process, when we're trying to solve some problems if we go by hats I think we can solve them easily. For folks in the IT industry during the sprint retrospectives, Six Thinking Hats can be really helpful. Invite me for your retro I'll wear the Blue Hat and let's how things go.
So the next tool is
Yes! it's breaking the pattern a.k.a Lateral Thinking.
On seeing the above puzzle to get one/first solution it would take few minutes the moment you get the first solution, an array of solutions would be poping your mind. So what it means? When we break the traditional thinking pattern lots of ideas will be flowing in our mind. But, how do we get those ideas out? Shiva spelled 4 steps which worked fabulously while doing classwork. Here are the steps:
- Set your focus on the primary problem
- List what you take for granted in the problem
- Drop what you take for granted in the problem
- Now generate the idea
What did we do in class? We took a loss-making restaurant for this exercise and here is what we did
- Focus is on Money
- Food takes it for grant in restaurant
- Drop food from the restaurant
What? What? what would we do by dropping food in the restaurant? That's the constraint we are setting ourselves and stuck with the problem. When we removed the food from the restaurant, believe me, we have got more than a dozen ideas to make money!!!!!!!!!
Try this out only when you have a problem!!!!!!
